College Draft Profile: Austin Kubitza

Austin Kubitza, RHP, Rice University

Class: Junior; Height: 6-5; Weight: 202

Update: 06/02/13

One of the elite strikeout artists in college baseball, Kubitza is averaging 11.25 punch outs per nine innings. The problem, however, is his control — or lack thereof. In 100 innings, the big right-hander has walked 48 batters, or an average of 4.32 BB/9. However, he’s walked just three over his final 20+ frames. His FIP, 2.72, ranks first among all pitchers with 60+ innings.

Projection: There’s some concern with Kubitza’s ability to throw strikes and his walk rate has worsened in each of his three seasons, going from 2.16 BB/9 to 4.26 BB/9 to 4.32 BB/9. He’s clearly got front of the rotation potential, but there’s a decent amount of risk because of his control problems. Still, though, he’s allowed just 11 extra-base hits and the ability to miss bats looks like a premium.

Ceiling: 3.0- to 3.5-win player

Likelihood of Reaching His Ceiling: Low to Moderate

Drafted: First Round
