College Draft Profile: Marco Gonzales

Marco Gonzales, LHP, Gonzaga University

Class: Junior; Height: 6-1; Weight: 185

Updated: 06/02/13

After a dominant sophomore season in 2011 (92.2 IP, 92 K’s, 23 BB, 1.55 ERA), Gonzalez has faltered a bit this season, seeing a rise in ERA (2.80) and a decline in K-rate. This season the young left-hander is averaging 8.15 K/9, 2.12 BB/9 and a 3.15 FIP.

Projection: More finesse than anything else, Gonzalez grades out as a mid to late first rounder. His work with Team USA last summer (29 K’s in 22 IP) adds to his impressive resume. One red flag, however, is the amount of extra-base hits he’s surrendered through his 106 innings: 17 doubles and a pair of triples. As a part-timer, he’s hitting .311/.375/.389 in 167 AB’s. He profiles as a good #4-type guy.

Ceiling: 2.0- to 2.5-win player

Likelihood of Reaching His Ceiling: Moderate

Drafted: First Round
